Benni Hemm Hemm is an Icelandic band lead by Benedikt H. Hermannsson. His band is ever-changing, so you can regularly hear Benni Hemm Hemm perform solo or as a trio or a ten piece band with horns and electric guitars, and occasionally the band expands to ridiculous sizes and reach numbers like 40 or 50, when the band collaborates with symphonic orchestras and choirs.
For Benni Hemm Hemm's latest album Benedikt decided to rely solely on the magnificent band Retro Stefson, who played the whole album with him in Sundlaugin, Sigur Rós's studio in Mosfellbær, Iceland. Skot is Benni Hemm Hemm's fourth LP and there he shows a different side on songwriting and arrangements as well as recording and production. There's no brass at all, there are lots of electric guitars, keyboards and harmoniums and harmonicas. In every way this new album is a departure from the previous ones, towards a playful sound and surreal yet serious lyrics, which feature thoughts on vegetarianism, fighting authority, kings and troubadours of medieval France, death, and the joy of life to name a few of the lyric subjects.
Skot is entirely sung in Icelandic. One might think that for the vast amount of people in the world that have for some reason not learned Icelandic, this would be a problem, which it really isn´t. Firstly because translations for the lyrics can be found on Benni Hemm Hemm´s website, www.bennihemmhemm.com, and secondly because this is music, and music has no language barriers. And who understand lyrics anyway?!
