Sudden Weather Change are a five piece band from Iceland, who don't whine in made-up languages or run around naked in forests. Their songwriting may remind people of the more complex side of Sonic Youth - with hypnotizing guitar lines interweaving with a solid bass and drum combo to create a huge wall of sound which goes perfectly with their none-sensical yet strangely cohesive lyrics. However, their attitude on stage might bring to mind the annual Running of the Bulls in Pamplona.
The band released a home recorded EP in 2006 and have played a number of concerts which has brought them attention with press both in Iceland and internationally. In April 2009 they released their first full-length album Stop! Handgrenade In The Name of Crib Death 'nderstand? with Kimi Records which has received good reviews.
In 2010 Sudden Weather Change won the Icelandic Music Award for best newcomer, and they have two more releases lined up for the year: A split EP with fellow Icelanders Reykjavík! and an EP made in collaboration with Ben Frost, ˝orbjörn Kolbrúnarson & ˝ór∂ur Hermannsson.
The songs on The Whaler 7”, The Thin Liner & The Whaler, show the band moving away from the lo-fi rock sound of their LP from last year to a more crisp, clean sound, but they still keep noisy. The songs are dynamic, loud and have a unconventional structure, they are constantly evolving with no particular chorus or verse. In The Whaler, the guys borrow lyrics from Icelandic band Skátar (“Get your motherfucking chainsaw! Put it down, put it in the water!”) as well as eighties hit “Electric Avenue” by Eddy Grant.
The Whaler 7” was recorded in Hljó∂riti Studio in Hafnarfjör∂ur, Iceland in October 2009 and was produced by Aron Arnarson who has produced and engineered many records, including production on Kimono’s Easy Music For Difficult People, Life Is Killing My Rock n’ Roll by Singapore Sling and engineer work on Björk’s Volta.
