In 1991, David Grubbs formed Gastr del Sol out of the final lineup of Bastro with Bundy K. Brown and John McEntire. After their first album, Brown and McEntire departed, and Jim O’Rourke arrived, initiating a sequence of unpredictable leaps across genre and practical approach alike that altered the passage of musical time as we knew it in the mid-90s. After six releases, Gastr disbanded in 1998. »Upgrade & Afterlife« was their fourth studio album, released in June 1996 by Drag City.
