WHAIT bringst together the musical languages of Wendy Eisenberg and more eaze (aka Mari Rubio). The album finds an intuitive, spontaneous common ground, full of moments of joy and discovery. Its music is bathed in love and celebration, continuing both artists’ deep-grooved furrows in current human music.

Recorded largely in the duo’s home studios in New York between vigorous touring schedules, »Sympathy at Home« captures an intuitive dialogue between the two musicians. It reflects their labyrinthine connections to experimental, folk, electronic and »avant rock« underworlds, as well as their intertwined lives. The album arrives at a busy point in both artists’ trajectories. Eisenberg’s self-titled 2026 album marked a milestone, turning their multi-genre mastery towards folk informed by the baroque pop of Judee Sill and Van Dyke Parks, with generous melodies and structural invention. More eaze’s work has established her as a musical nexus; alongside countless collaborations and guest appearances, she released two solo albums for Thrill Jockey in 2026. Across these records, she expanded her core instrumentation of violin, electronics and guitar into beautiful meditations on form and emotion.

The gentle, exploratory synchronicity between Rubio and Eisenberg is apparent from the outset. »Human Music« sparkles with Eisenberg’s guitar, its melodic complexity recalling Robbie Basho, before their double-tracked vocals harmonise. Rubio’s violin blooms alongside sympathetic keyboards, then a wistful but defiant vocal delivers the chorus, swallowed up by cascading rainbows of electronic colour. The protagonist looks back on previous versions of the self in a song about coming to terms with change and becoming.

First single »Falling Down« continues this dynamic, with guitar and drum machine providing a rolling backdrop as the two vocal performances twist into surprising melodic spirals. The result recalls The Roches’ oblique take on Americana, filtered through the deconstructed pop of 2000s Chicago artists Sam Prekop and The Sea and Cake. For two artists so associated with abstract or sideways music, it’s gratifying to hear Eisenberg and Rubio sculpt song forms in their own image. »Newness« uncurls slowly, with improvisatory charm: chiming guitar strings converse with playful percussion and close-miked movements. Eisenberg’s vocal is loose, diaristic and completely relaxed, affectionate towards the moment.

»Like You« sees more eaze further explore her own voice, an approach also evident on her 2026 album »Sentence Structure in the Country«. It’s a guitar-led, weaving narrative that serenely gives way to the centrepiece of Side 2, the 12-minute »Cache Issue«. This long-form exploration of space evokes an open expanse, with dancing guitar and electronics chasing each other through the sparseness. The two musicians become centrifugal forces, opening up a fantasyland of possibilities while remaining gentle and guiding.

»sympathy at home« closes with a question. On »Don’t Go«, Rubio’s violin teases out harmonies around Eisenberg’s open vocal, coloured by chromatic guitar. The closing refrain, »We didn’t have to fight, remember?«, sums up their musical synchronicity while leaving the question open. Whait embrace change and mutability, sometimes resolving and sometimes finding transcendence in openness to the moment.
