Andy Graydon and Klaus Janek share a long history of collaboration that began in Berlin, ranging from intimate trios in Janek’s home studio to ten-piece ensembles at Ausland. When Graydon relocated to the US, the rhythm of live performance waned, but the memory of their interplay — the tension between complementary forms and reflexes, from deep bass to airy hiss, from swift gestures to slowly developing layers — remained vivid. With live encounters increasingly rare, they turned to a new mode of working: exchanging recordings over distance and time, responding to one another’s sound objects in gradual steps.
This process created a different kind of dialogue, shifting from the intuitive flow of improvisation to the deliberate shaping of fixed material. Their collaboration became less like performing and more like writing, carving directly into blocks of sound. The long-term, asynchronous exchange revealed unexpected resonances, as opposing tendencies continued to meet and transform. Each track became part of a conversation unfolding across distance, building patiently through gaps, surges, and pauses.
During the making of the final piece, Graydon was immersed in Stefan Helreich’s »A Book of Waves«, which traces the ocean wave through science, history, technology, and culture. The metaphor of cyclical motion and constant transformation felt deeply connected to their own endeavor — circling around ideas, returning in altered form, and arriving at a shared work shaped by time and resonance. This record stands as the echo of that orbit, a testament to collaboration sustained across distance.
